1. How did Good Natured Art get its start?
Good Natured Art started pretty much by accident.  During a conversation with a coworker at my zoo job, I was introduced to the craft of needle felting.  dani ives good natured artI thought it would be so fun to create cute little animal figurines, so I ordered some supplies and started experimenting.  Soon I was cranking out little sculptures, pin cushions, and jewelry.
Then, a couple years later, I started to create two-dimensional pieces, which I lovingly refer to as wool paintings.  Once I was comfortable enough with my skills in that technique, I began to offer commissions.  That’s when my business really took off and became sustainable as my full-time income.  About a year after that, in 2015, I made the leap into becoming a full-time artist!

2. What is your favorite piece you have made and how did you develop the idea for it?
Oh, goodness.  I have lots of favorites.  I LOVE creating toadstool and bunny pieces, but most recently I created portraits of my own pets to include in an exhibition.  Those pieces will always be VERY special to me.

3. What currently inspires your work the most?
I get most of my inspiration from my love of animals and super nerdy and science-y things.  I go outdoors as much as possible, and my best ideas come to me when I’m hiking. So, you’ll find me in the woods when I’m not felting.

4.
Do you have any tips/advice for anyone wanting to dive into needle felting?
Yes!  Seek out reputable companies that are selling quality supplies.  I love www.livingfelt.com, www.needlefeltingsupplies.com, and www.feltingsupply.com.  There
donkey needle feltare lots of instructional videos on YouTube, and I offer a couple felting e-courses on my website too!

5. What is the one question you are asked the most?
Haha, I’m always asked if I do custom orders.  And the answer is yes, but on a limited basis.  I encourage anyone who is interested to check out my website, click on Commissions, and check out that info.

6. Anything new happening with Good Natured Art you want to share?
I recently announced that I’m writing a book!  I’ve signed on with Abrams Books, and I’m SO excited to create a DIY book that will walk you through beautiful painting with wool projects to incorporate into your home and wardrobe.  I’ll be working on that for the rest of 2017, and I can’t wait to see to see it out in the world in Spring 2019.

7. Who is your favorite maker/creator at the moment?
One of my favorite artists is Allison May Kiphuth.  She creates the most beautiful and tiny dioramas inspired by the natural world. Her talent is insane, and she is the sweetest person. Definitely check out her Instagram and website—you won’t regret it!

8. Describe yourself in three words.
Thoughtful, Curious, Grateful
Alternatively: Artist, Nerd, Adventurer
